this kinda took a turn here...

My point, Sarah, is that for years blacks (and most minorities) were treated lower than second class citizens for decades until the Martin Luther King movement in the 60's. Some still feel that way and that little has changed - that I truly beg to differ. Even Bill Cosby agrees with me on that point - the only American of black roots that has been wildly successful and worth millions and is willingly to stand up against most black activists.

We've inadvertantly allowed channels that are race specifictohave arisen out of guilt perhaps or simple compensation - but now need to wiped away or restructured. The race card is used whenever there seems to be some political advantage to be had when these changes are brought about.

Like all pendulums when held to one side it swings pretty far to the other sidewhen let go. We need to let it ease to the middle.

You are right, there should be no race based venues. Because that's something you cannot change. As for other language channels - I see little harm for they cater to a very small select few - mostly for those that don't know English. Religious stations are fine - as long as anyone can belong to that particular faith.
I agree with everything you just said. You summed up exactly how I feel about the whole issue........

What I need to know is... Why so much of daily life is based on television.
Think about it for a second here. Getting all in an uproar about a TV program/channel. Seems pretty silly if you ask me.
If you can't listen to a point of view other than your own, how can you learn from it?
Not to mention most of the crap on TV is just that... crap! Maybe I'm just biased because I don't turn my TV on. Oh yeah... you can also turn it off!

Another thought, Dr.King's movement was what, not even 70 years ago. Hell there are wars that have lasted longer than that!
I must say, if I was treated like that then, I'm SURE I'd still be pretty damn angry today!

Getting back on topic though, what happened was just plain WRONG, period.

What those criminals did was just plain wrong, regardless of race. I hope they are fried for it. Yes there is obviously a double standard in society and it is upsetting. But remember this isn't a perfect world where everyone is looked upon equally, far from it. Thats why the race card will continue to be played when crap like the Duke Lacrosse "scandal" comes up. Is it fair for either side? No, thats the kind of backwards society we still live in. Personally I think that chick was a lying ***** but anyways...The likes of Al Sharpton and other hypocrites are not representive of blacks. So don't go thinking all blacks and other minority groups think like they do. The whole "why can't we get our own TV station" thing is backwards thinking really. Like whites, the majority, don't already control the media. So what if minorities want to have their own little niche so to speak, God knows minorities have been abused and disenfranchised throughout this nation's history. Why can't they have ethnic oriented TV stations? That would be same as saying it is wrong for a Little China, Little Italy, Little Havana, etc to exist. Its both a source of cultural pride and segregation at the same time, so be it. Listen everyone is entitled to their own opinion, ignorantly racist or not, but thats ok. God knows this world would suck *** if we all thought the same way.

Sorry about the essay lol

Two seperate issues, IMHO.

1) Hate crimes ARE hate crimes. No 2 ways about it. If *I* were running things they would ALL suffer the same as those they committed those atrocities against.

2) BET, while hopeless mired in stereotypes that would have been seen as reprehensible 30-35 years ago, is not the enemy of racial harmony. In intent, it permits a venue for non-mainstream producers, directors, actors, comics, etc, that they do not have access to elsewhere. Take a moment and look around you at the racial diversity (people in IN, NE, WI, and a few other states, who live OUTSIDE of college-towns or major metropolitan areas, you are excused from this exercise, until school lets back in) readily apparent in normal life. NOW, sit down and watch any of the main TV channels, broadcast or cable/satellite, and tell me if you see ANYwhere near the same racial diversity represented in mainstream media? You will NOT! Now, most of you will create in your minds all sorts of excuses for this, justifyable, you will say to yourselves, backed up by whatever lame-assed argument you have ponied up. You want W.E.T.? It's ALL W.E.T., ALL the time. Always has been. Of course, since YOU are in the cultural majority, you see nothing wrong with this, and easily point to anything outside this cultural majority as "unfail" because you don't have one ALL your own.

Quicher bichin'! Oh, and SPARE me that tired-***'d "I never owned any slaves," line. I never took ANY "affirmative-action" preferential positioning, either, but, I bet all you phugkin losers who see someone of color who DOES have some chedder in the bank, and professional respect due, ASSUME they got it through Affermative-Action, don't you?!?!? Punk-*** *****-phugkas. I make my OWN way! I don't NEED Affirmative Action to pave my way for me. YOU, a member of the cultural majority, don't have to step up to a job interview and wonder how prejudiced the HR-asshat your talking to, is. 10% of you control 90% of the wealth, and when I come to the table with my OWN, you snicker behind your backs and poke each other in the ribs and whisper "affirmative-action." KISS MY ***!!! I EARNED THIS! Earn your OWN, and quit making excuses for your inadequacies!!! I've got 400 years of repression, subjugation, and downright unfair-ness to overcome ON A DAILY BASIS. You have, what, a couple-dozen years of slightly favorable rules that STILL haven't begun st scratch the surface, and you CRY about it. WEAKLINGS!

GROW A SPINE!

edyt: if the tone had stayed with the outrage at the crimes committed I cudda stayed with you, but, you digresses, so I did. SOME of you dissapoint me.

Okay I'm ignorantly racist........you know what that comment makes you IGNORANT in general. I'd rather be ignorantly racist for wanting equal rights than to judge others when I don't know them, there life experiences, or anything else about them.

Just because you're black doesn't mean you're the only one picked on and descriminated against on a daily basis. I am a female in the computer line of work which is most often pre-dominately male. Every day I am second guessed, looked down upon, and I am sure I get snickers behind my back constantly. I am also sure that my ancestors weren't rich enough to own even one slave. Ya know not every white person coulda afforded slaves back in thosed days. Oh and BTW there were white slaves back then too, only someone decided it would be better off to call them endentured servants. Oh and one more thing.....I have loads and loads of respect for black ppl that are doing well for themselves and I only wish that all black ppl were doing as well as others. I have a couple of close friends who are engineers where I work and they have such a good work ethic and I have so much respect for them because I do know what it's like to be called a nobody when you're young and then when you get older you try to prove yourself and become something big only to find that there are other ppl standing in the way that will make it hard for you to become a some body.

wow this went personal fast, i was merely pointing out that there was langauge in one of your statements of the white majority coming the minority and how that could be seen as racist, because why would that bother u if you felt all races were equal..........i wasnt calling u or anyone else a racists just merely pointing out why some people who say similar things say them....thats all, meant no harm or to accuse anyone of anything
And you misunderstood what I was saying. I already said that what I was trying to say is that eventually it'll even out. Not that the whites are going to be the minority but I'm not going to think that whites are so inferior we will always be the majority. I know you weren't calling me racist but obviously some ppl thought you were and decided to agree with you and say that I'm an ignorant racist. I have no hard feelings toward you.....

good, glad to hear it[sm=icon_cheers.gif]....there is always an inherent risk when talking about politics or religion to confuse the issue with the person and i just wanted to make sure u understood that
oh yes and I also understand not to single one person out and make them feel alienated instead of listening to there view and attempting to see where they're coming from when talking politics and religion or any other touchy subject. If I think someone's saying something I don't agree with I usually try to ask if what they said is really what they meant and re-phrase what they said so that they can understand what I thought it sounded like.
