Guy wants to buy my car... but WHAT?
No, if you do seller financing, you always have a contract that says if he doesn't pay on schedule, you retrieve your property and he loses any money he has paid you for the car, and any money he has spent on the car. Legally, if he's on his last payment, and he doesn't make the payment on time to satisfy the contract, you can take back the car.

i've seen plenty of scams, and this one doesn't seem like the typical scam email. i doubt he's a scammer, just a kid who's not too bright

You're right, it's not the "typical" scam email. But it is a scam, and I have read phone transcripts of busted scammers saying almost word for word what this guy's email said.

You know, I once did a friend a favor, and allowed him to pay me $250 up front for a $600 4G63 engine with HKS 264/272 Camshafts... So he owed me $350... That dragged out for 6 months with him saying "You'll get it, don't worry."
Then, the car FINALLY gets running, and the engine blows up due to his neglegence, and now, I'm out $350 because he is refusing to pay it. Of course, I'll kick his *** a few times, but I'll never see the money. Things go TERRIBLY wrong when you do people favors like this, do not make this mistake, you'll regret it for the rest of your life. This is either a scam, or a very dumb person, either way, do you want to be dealing with him?
I'm going to send him an E-Mail telling him I'd be interested in selling him my Civic, and that we can work out a payment plan no problem. See if he responds, because chances are, if he is scamming people, he probably sent an E-Mail to SOMEONE with a Civic.
