wow everyone is giving advice and they dont know what os. what is the os and version and i can help you if its xp pro there is a quick easy fix if its home im not sure but i think this might work.

go to start, run, type:msconfig, then launch system restore, restore the computer to an earlier time preferrably as early as possible. and this should fix it

 

I'd say your best alternative is to backup her system and re-image. It works and in the end may be faster and less frustrating. You start digging into the registery and what not and it can get nastier and nastier....
