RE: Question
The 4 rings are certainly the Auto Union logo (or the modern version of the original Auto Union logo). The 4 companies that were merged into Auto Union AG in 1932 were Wanderer (originally a bicycle company founded in 1855), Horch (founded 1899 by August Horch), Audi (founded 1910 by August Horch), and DKW (originally a company developing steam-powered cars, founded in 1916). The 4 ring logo originally had the logos of the individual companies in the center of each ring, thus the order of the rings (from left to right) is: Audi, DKW, Horch, Wanderer.
Auto Union merged with NSU Motor Works AG (founded 1873) in 1969 to form Audi NSU Auto Union AG. Their logo was just the words "AUDI NSU". While the 4 ring logo has been used pretty much continuously since the 1932 Auto Union merger, I'm not sure when the logo lost the 4 member company logos and became just the 4 interlocked rings."
Hope this answers your question
