landscaping....as i'm sure you know...is hard work. i moved 3 tons of rock, wheel barrow by wheel barrow from the driveway to the back yard. that's a good way to discover musclesyou never knew you had!! definitely back breaking work. might be worth while to hire parts of that out!
but...living in california, having a nice back yard is a must since you're able to enjoy it year round!
