I have yet to be beat with my 2004 S4 versus an M3....Problem with M3 owners is that they think they have a fast car and most don't know how to drive for the life of them, not to mention the 2004 S4 is the biggest sleeper car on the road today.....So, most M3 owners just don't expect it. Now add a new exhaust and port tunning mod.....there is not much on the road to beat.
Plus, jus think about what happens to M3 owners when mother nature gets a little wet......They park in the garage.....we laugh...!!!

HELLOOOOOO!!!
This thread isn't about the 2004 S4 vs an M3. READ THE ORIGINAL POST!
So then post your '04 S4 notes in another thread.
This thread has gotten diluted from it's original question, because you, diabolical1, and turbo38t started talking about the V8 S4.
The original question was:

The original question was:
If I bought an 00-01 s4, what mods would be needed to beat a stock m3. same years. How much would I have to spend.
An AWE turbo upgrade on your car would be a great place to start up to 440hp depending on the kit. I have had good experance with the guys at RPM Racing inc. They carry all the AWE parts and more. their number is 631-423-0275 ask for Abe, I have delt with him in the past.
Hey Noobie! Welcome!
But you've repeated this diatribe in your first three posts (in three different threads).
Seeing that your name is AZRPM, I would guess that you are Abe at RPM Racing, Inc.
Kind of uncool that you are trying to pose as a consumer who is recommending a tuner/vendor.
Time to come clean, pal.

well one more point, the fact that the S4 is AWD really puts the S4 ahead of the M3 simple because its more practicle, if the S4 can handle better in the rain, i want it...especially living in new jersey....
plus BMW i think, is overrated. all the rich folgies drive BMW

I considered the M3 as my first choice when I was recently shopping around for a car, but ended up with the S4. Reason being that I test drove a lot of the M3's, and they were indeed fast, and purposeful racing machines. I liked the S4 because it was 1) quiet 2) had 4 doors (granted that the '97-'98 M3s did have sedan models) 3) more solid build quality. I easily take on many cars on the road and still have the ability to shuttle my friends to and from lunch.
But I digress...
I think if you want to beat an M3, you can. If comes down to the conditions and terms of racing. M3's don't make their power till the higher RPMs, so... race from 0-30mph. Or perhaps you'd want to race one on ice or very wet pavement.

My oldest brother has a 2002 M3 and I've been trying to convince him to race me, but apparently he has more brains than not. I have got to get him to commit before he sells the damn thing in his pursuit of an E55!!
