I've experienced reliability issues all along the way and a great deal of the things that have failed on me are not on this list (silly little things like auxillary water pumps)...I've had brake cyliders die...I was going to start naming some things but I won't - it would take too long and it would make me depressed. I only went to K04s because my K03s crapped out for instance...and I've had everything from door locks to air conditionaing die. Right now my CD player doesn't work. Its never ending IMO.I've pretty much replaced the entire suspension and everything on the engine apart from the block...even then I replaced all the gaskets and more last year (had major oil leak into my transmission)....la la la ...
I hear you! In my first 6mo of owning the car, there was a ton of little things that went wrong. My N75 went out, MAF, DV's, I put in Votlangs, only to discover my TRE's were going.

While no where near as bad as your list, it was still frustrating.

Since I put in the RNS-E I have my old radio just sitting on a self.....

Would a basic A4 be more reliable? And do the S4's maintenance costs grow as the car gets more and more mileage on it?

I'd say a stock 2.8 FWD 5ps is the most reliable on the B5's. But also the most boring.
The S4 seams to need a lot of maintenance around 80-100kmi. This little windows is when most little things start to go, like the control arms, TRE's, brakes, clutch, all the wear items, & some other little things.
