Default '01 S4 no start.

Alright, so I go out to the S this morning go to start it and nothing...Cranks hard but no start. and then I notice the battery voltage is just barely dipping below 12volts. and I know thats no good. I tried cables once, but no luck.
I'm thinking Alternator. what do you think?

deffinantly not the alternator because it has no function during start up. Start with the basics and see if plugs are sparking and your getting fuel to the cylinders.

Im thinking of just doing a big overhaul before it goes away for the winter. Cam belt (im at 88k) plugs, air filter, fuel filter, fuel pump, and injectors. of course I will also check them first.

turn on the car but don't crank the engine, let the fuel pump build pressure first

that is a pretty low reading for the battery, but the fact that it still wouldn't start when you jumped it is odd, too

do you hear the cylinders fire at all or is it all just the starter motor?

update:

I put in an extra stock ECU and it fired right up. Looks like I have to hit up the classifieds and find myself a new chipped ECU. but what should I go with? I have APR 93 right now. I heard GIAC was nice though.

As of why this happened. I do not know yet. Ill be opening it up once im back in the shop.

For the ecu chip i have heard any stories about the solder on the apr chips breaking off causing the chip to not function probably. If your apr chip isnt flash and it has been soldered there is a very good chance that the solder is making contact and the ecu chip is shorting out. Call up apr and send it in to them as i beleive they have a lifetime warranty.

yeah, thats what my boss said.

My APR chip is infact a flash though. I opened it up and looked. al that was in there was writing inside saying "ECS 11/04"

I know the chip was purchased through ECS. I gave APR a call and they still haven't called me back. I will probably just overnight them my ECU. we'll see what happens.
