what exactly do you want? yes the 2004 b6 has the 4.2. do you allready own one? Or are you looking at buying one. What car has bad cam actuators? and if they told you they have to pull the engine to fix, then you parbably need to pull the engine to fix?

Im sorry but your post dosnt make much sense and its not really asking any questions. You just want info about it?... here you go?

"The third generation, B6 platform S4 debuted in mid-2003. Despite having moved to yet another entirely new platform, the S4's most publicized new feature was its engine. It became available in three bodystyles for the 2004 model year: saloon, Avant (wagon) and convertible. Replacing the 2.7 L twin-turbo V6 engine of the previous generation S4 was a 4.2 L, 40-valve V8 based on the unit from the A8 and producing 344 PS (253 kW/340 hp), making it more potent than the RS2 and nearly as powerful as the B5 platform RS4. Road tests conducted by American automotive magazines indicated that it could go from a standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.6 seconds, and make it to 200 km/h (124 mph) in slightly over 20 seconds, although doing this led to fuel consumption dipping into single digits, considerably lower than the earlier models, leading to the addition of a $1,700 gas guzzler tax (combined 20.2 mpg) for the 6-speed manual sedan in the United States. Like its predecessors, the model was standard with a six-speed manual and Quattro, the Tiptronic transmission remained an option. The B6 platform S4 was replaced by the B7 platform S4 in late-2005."

I don't see where in his post that he asked for a wikipedia design synopsis of the 4.2l B6 car and it's selling points.

Saudi04... Is this your car that is having an issue? According to the Bentley manual to remove the right cylinder head the engine has to come out. Sorry to read that you are having issues with your car if that is the fact.

I appreciate the response. I guess I wasnt as specific as I should've been. My car makes a slight clicking on startup and only during startup.A friend put on computer and misfire codes came up. 2nd opinion from non dealer found no problems at all.The main issue is the eng light comes on and when it does it chugs when car is stopped. Once I begin moving light goes off and car runs fine. I'm not burning any fluids at all. It also only seems toact upwhen the outside temperature is above 80 degrees. The car is otherwise flawless and I dont know ifI should cut my losses or have repaired. The mileage is high due to my commute and I'm thinking others may experience same once mileages start to hit the 60-70K range. Initial diagnosis was thecam actuator which switches between hi-lorange is gone. This coming from a dealer at $100 per hour. My fear is having engine pulled , actuators replaced and problem still existing.

I wouldn't worry about the high miles. The mechanic at my dealer who works on my car has an 04' with 120k on the clock and it runs flawlessly. The 4.2l engine is pretty rugged. It's been around for several years in A8, A6 and Allroad cars as well as the S4. If you love your car and have the coin to get it fixed go for it. Just make sure the call is made by someone who really knows what they are talking about and will back it up with a guarantee that if you go this route the problem will be resolved.

i think you have two problems....

one is the cam tensioner....
i hear maybe the chain is stretching and the chain tensionerhas to be adjusted.... replacing the tensioner supposibly doesn't solve the issue... and i don't think that the cam tensioner sound comes with a fault code.... because i'm having the same issue in my s4 and i have no fault codes.......- so yes you'd have to pull the engine...

the second is the fault code issue.... missfire? what was the code??? ... think it could be like an o2 sensor?
