Default I'm a noob

Hi, I'm currently shopping around for cars and started looking at the 00-01 S4 as a alternative to my first pick, which was a e36 m3. I've read over all the new noob faqs, about component failures, and costly repairs, but whats the average probability? I've seen some people complaining a ton about repairs while others are saying they havent expeirneced very many if any problems at all. Whats the reliability on one of these things like if assuming you go through proper maintence and/or replace certin things before they can veen fail like the TBB, BPVs and F pipe. I would be planning on modding the car performance wise and i am trying to get a feel for how stable the platform would be.

its going to be the same as with anything. If its well cared for, you wont have anything at least nothing major, in the way of problems, if it was not taken care, dont buy it, chances are it will be nothing but a headache!

I bought a b5 S4 with 180K it had an engine+tranny changed due to turbo failure other than the typical TB job price and central locking pump failure the car outperformes its class. I'm happy with it. Runs like a new car. You just have to take care of your vehicle to expect a long life out of it.

Agreed, it's a big toss up some of us experiance the worst, such as turbo failure and some like myself have just been lucky where nothin ever seems to be wrong and basic maintainance and good upgrades have kept the car running excellent..

If you buy one with over a 100,000mi, & under $12k, it's going to cost you some coin, if you find a well sorted & maintained one, it will cost more up front, but be more reliable.

Yeah I agree, I think it all depends on whichcar you buy.The shopping, actually more realistically hunting for a good quality car is difficult, but since I hope that you choose to go with the audi I thought this might help. I didn't know some of this stuff whenI bought myS4 2001.5, sogood luck with your hunting.

Always kept mine maintained since the day i bought it, and i know the original owner did as well cuz he had every piece of documentation for the car, and i've kept it up too. Only issue i had was a leaky rear output seal, and it only cost me $10 to fix it. Sweetest combination of power and style.
