Default 2004 S4 oil consumption/engine replacement

My 2004 S4 now has 98,000 miles on it and the oil consumption is way out of control! It’s at the dealer now with the engine torn down, trying to determine if the extended warranty will cover a new engine. Initially the dealer used a scope and did find scoring on the cylinder but fidelity warranty wanted the engine torn down, in order to rule out carbon deposits vs scoring. So I had to authorize the dealer to tear it down, at my own cost. Now, after tearing it down, they noted the timing chain tensioner is broken … what does this mean for my chances of engine replacement being covered. Anyone have any experience with this, any advice?
still no decision on whether my engine is to be covered and replaced…

FYI: Oil consumption history
When I purchased the car new, it would burn approx 1 Qt every 1,000 miles. Which is within audi spec, unfortunately. As the miles added up the oil went more and more quickly. At 50,000 miles I began keeping a record(A MUST DO), it would go approx 700-800 miles before the oil light would come on. It quickly got worse, going to 500 miles per quart around 75,000 MILES. Once I hit 90K it was using a quart for every 300-400 miles. Now it’s going approx 100-300 miles on a quart!!!! That’s a quart for every tank of gas! I frequently drive Boston to northern Vermont 270 miles each way, now I have to add 2 quarts each way. 135 miles per F’in quart
So at 98,000 my warranty is about to expire and the oil consumption is more than an expensive pain in the ***, it’s just not sustainable, the engine is going down quick!

Unhappy Oil Consumption & Cylinder Scoring

I have a similar problem with my 2006 S4. I bought the car used in 2007 and experienced oil consumption problems at about 90,000 miles in 2010. My warranty ran out at 100,000 miles, but before it did I brought the problem to my dealer's attention at about 92,000 miles. An oil weight test was completed, but the dealer told me that the car was within spec, athough I was not told the exact results of the test. Following that, my car began to consume oil just as yours did. I began adding every few hundred miles, to the point where I have been adding it at almost every gasoline fill up. I brought the car back to the dealer a few more times before the warranty ran out, but they did nothing further, despite my complaints. Research indicates that a leak down test or a cylinder compression test should have been conducted, but was not. When I brought the car back to the dealer again at about 130,000 miles, the dealer finally looked at the cylinders and found scoring, which given the history of buring oil for the last 40,000 has no doubt been the problem all along. However, Audi of America is now telling me that the car is out of warranty, which is wrong since the problem was brought to their attenion 8,000 miles before the warranty expired. There are dozens of blogs and messages from people with similar problems with the 4.2 liter engine, so I would like to know how your ordeal turned out. Please let me know, and if anyone else has had a similar problem, please advise of it. Thanks.

Default Oil Consumption & Cylinder Scoring

Hey man, sorry to hear, I think you have a tough road ahead of you… since your past warranty
For me, my car was still under warranty because I purchased an extended one before 50,000 miles.
So once I agreed to foot the bill for engine tear down, they ripped it apart and the insurance adjuster verified the scoring but more importantly the cause was the “timing chain tensioners “ apparently there are a few of them and they were all damaged or even broken off allowing a lot of play for the timing chain, which definitely leads to catastrophic engine failure.
So since mine was under warranty it cost me 50 deductible plus another 180.00 in random small part not covered
Ever since my dealer figured out how to navigate this somewhat treacherous road of engine replacement, they have done quite a few more! Prime Audi in Westwood MA 781-234-2011 My service rep was Bill Gillis who is a really great guy!
In the end you REALLY should have records showing the mileage every time you added oil even if you need to fabricate it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
( I suspect that’s what finally got them to do something about my situation) cause every time I brought it in and pleaded with them they always said it was within audi spec
Where are you located? Please call me 617 947 8060 Chris
In the end, the bill for the replacement was just over 18,000
I’ve now driven it 8,000 miles with NO oil problems!
