Unhappy broke

so my buddie was driving my s4 the other day and it just died on him while he was going 75, and would not start again. He said there was no noise it just quit running. When I try to start it it sounds like the motor has no compression for a while then it will backfire out the intake. the timing belt is still on and has tension and all looks good there. any Ideas where I should start to figure this out. Oh and I cant get my vag-com to work, but a regular OBD II shows no codes.

Start with the basics. Fuel, Air, Compression. Check all those and see where you are at.

Did he have any symptoms before it died? Over-heating, sputtering. Any EPC lights lately? Sometimes the crank sensors will give a couple warnings and then totally die. No battery light came on? Is it getting fuel?

Sorry, just your description was a little vague.

yeah getting fuel, spark everything needed to run a motor. I had a catalist below heat threshhold or something like that. thats it tho. on occasion it it will backfire out the intake now but that is the only sign of life it has. Oh and a while back it cut out on me for 2 seconds while I was driving. but it ran great other than that.

here is what my no start turned into. after trying to start it a few more times the motor seized. I haven't torn it apart yet but I'll update when I do. Into it 5 hours now. and yes thats a dirt floor.

I don't mean to say anything mean about your buddy but I'm just throwing it out there. I'm sure hes a great guy and totally trustworthy. I had that happen to me with my saab 900 a few years ago and what happened was I happened to notice my coolant temp almost pegged to the the hot side and I immediately pulled over and popped the hood to let all that heat out. I waited about 40 minutes until it cooled and drove gently the rest of the 5 miles to home. The next day I was checking it out and a coolant line had burst and drained my coolant and so very closely seized the motor (ran great after rebuilding the heads.

Moral of the story, maybe your water pump or some other cooling component failed while driving and your buddy didn't notice the hot temp gauge. The 2.7t when its warm only takes a few minutes without coolant to be dangerously hot.
