does anyone know about mafs?????
my car has been running funny for a while now. codes say maf readings are all over. so figured i need a new maf. my car is an 01 with 56xxx miles. it has apr software a darintake and straight pipe turbo back exhaust. i have all new coil packs and plugs on it. i called ecs and the guy convinced me to put the rs4 maf on saying it would go right in. not true. i have already got the fitment by cutting the stock airbox and making a pipe after the maf to mount to the bipipe. what ive found is that my car had a hitachi maf factory, this rs4 is a bosch and i read that the wiring is different. i think i wired it correctly but the car runs the same. i need help. anyone have any experience swapping to the rs4 maf? is my apr software wrong for this or what????? i cant figure this out. is there something else that could throw maf codes????
There is no reason to upgrade the MAF on an S4 with stock turbos. It is not a restriction at K03 power levels. You will not gain any power.
For this very reason, there is no software out there (at least that I'm aware of) that is tuned for the RS4 MAF, stock injectors, and stock K03 turbos. Therefore, your best bet would be to try to return the RS4 MAF. The guy at ECS was either misinformed or trying to make a sale. Not to rub it in even more, but just so you know, ECS sells the RS4 MAF for $470 while you can get it from www.genuineaudiparts.com for only $139.54. It is the same MAF used on 4.2L V8 A8s, S8s, S4s, and RS4s. The part # is 077133471KX.
What you want is a replacement Hitachi MAF since your S4 is a 2001 (part #06C133471AX, probably cheapest at www.genuineaudiparts.com). That should fix the MAF codes and get the car back to running the way that it should be running.
If you're still hell bent on installing the RS4 MAF, you'll need to do the following:
1) Convert from the Hitachi MAF to the Bosch. You'll need to purchase the Bosch MAF plug and wiring with pins and then re-wire it in.
2) You'll need to either mod your stock airbox or purchase an OEM RS4 airbox.
3) You'll need an RS4 accordion hose since the RS4 MAF will not mate up to the stock S4 accordion hose.
Even after you do all this, you'll still be left with a car that runs like total crap or will not run at all. This is because the software needs to be tuned for the MAF. Since there are no tunes out there for this hardware combo, you'd have to get a custom tune and that could be costly since it's a fair bit of work from a tuning standpoint.
Hope this helps.

damnit! all i wanted was to make my car run right. this guy tells me it would be an upgrade from the faulty stock one. i already modded the airbox, fabbed the intake pipe(which blows away the stupid accordian hose) and rewired the damn thing and yes it still runs funny. this sucks. i had to shave down the rs4 maf to make it work so now im out the money i paid for it as well. i had two different guys at ecs verify that this maf went right on no mods. its a bosch and i only paid 180 but what a waste of 180 dollars. its fast as hell but feels like a miss in second and third gear. but stills pulls hard as ****. its really weird thats what it was doing with the old maf. do u think since the maf is off its running off the map sensors instead?
I'd be careful running that MAF with your current hardware and software. You're in uncharted waters and could be running dangerously lean.
If there's no MAF signal, you could be running in speed density which uses feedback from the MAP sensor (among other places). It all depends on how APR has coded it in their software.

Sounds like you spoke with a "new guy" at ECS...or something. I've always had good luck with them. They don't have the lowest prices on everything...but they usually have decent prices. My latest order from them was a couple of CV boot kits which were the cheapest I could find, shipped quickly, and had all the right parts.
