Help deciding btwn Stg 3 2001 S4 vs. 2004 S4 V8 - Dynosheets of V8 Seem a Little Low?
If you're looking for some fun in the windy roads, I would say lean toward the B5. Test drive both of course, but, there is definitely less body roll and sloppiness in the B5. It's a smaller, tighter platform and you don't have the weight of the V8 up front.
If you need to drive your kids around in it at all, then the larger B6/7 is the way to go. Even with the B7, if my 3-yr old is in the back in his carseat, the front seat has to be pushed way up. In the B5 it's even worse. In terms of the handling, a $250 swaybar will take care of a lot of the roll issue.
Ditto those suggesting the test drives. Also have your kids pile in and see if everyone fits.

If you are going with the B5, def. make sure you have the service records or have someone check it out. I thought mine was fine until i took it in to get chipped. $2300 later i have a hell of a car... But beware the b5, these cars are for enthusiasts, and people tend to beat on them, but if you find a good one, its oh so sweet.
low mileage b5's are overrated. Just buy one around 75k-80k that just had their timing belt replaced. At that point in time, most of the maintenance has been completed..
I cannot speak for the dp/intake upgrades on a B6, but I can say that the H&R springs with the Hotchkis tubular sways on Koni Sports is a fantastic setup. Crisp dialed-in handling and a very nice stance, yet a very streetable ride.
My first B6 S4 was a Tip car - my present S4 is a 6MT. I chipped the Tip car and while there were no brutal power gains, the throttle response was very nicely improved. I'm going to do that to my current car in 2011 when the last of my CPO warranty is gone. I do not want to do it until then because I have read some horror stories about AOA screwing people with engine problems due to chips, snub mounts and downpipes. Until then it will just be the catback - have not decided on which one yet.
