High unexplainable spikes in RPM when hitting 2400RPMs
Gentlemen,
I've searched everywhere and can't seem to find an answer. I'm bringing my car into the garage tomorrow to have it evaluated, but before I do, I want to at least have an idea as to what my problem MIGHT be.
I have an 01 S4 with 82K under the hood, no mods.
The problem seems to be noticeable in 3rd, 4th and sometimes 5th gear. Whenever I push from 3rd into 4th (or 4th into 5th), my RPMs would jump from 24~2600 all the way up to roughly 44~5000 rpms. Most of the time as soon as I notice the sudden spike/jump in revs, I shift to a lower gear for fear of blowing something out, but there have been several curious occasions in which I did not shift and let the rpms hit 5000. Whenever I did do this, upon hitting ~52k rpms, it drops back down to about 40-4400 and propels me forward, acting as if my turbos somehow skipped something and finally latched to a gear and shot me forward.
I'm curious as to whats going on and what could possibly be broken, damaged.
Thanks.
John

sounds like your clutch is shot... does it only happen when you are giving it a decent amount of gas. Depends on how shot the clutch is, if you baby doll the throttle, it doesn't happen?

It DOES only happen when I give it a decent amount of gas, usually during a medium to hard acceleration. If I just lightly accelerate, it doesn't really do much.
So possible blown clutch?
So possible blown clutch?
YUP, I drove a S4 with 110k miles on it, still had original clutch I believe... It drove nice till I mashed on it in second gear and it burned the clutch. I figured there was an issue with the pressure plate or something, needless, I didn't buy that car.
See what the shop says tomorrow, but I believe you will need a full clutch replacement. There are TONS of threads on which clutch should I get, so read those.

Slipping clutch. You guys called it to a "T". Gentlemen says my pressure plate is going and that my flywheel will most likely need to be replaced, he says I pretty much need to replace my entire clutch system.
Additionally, I asked him about aftermarket clutches (like the RS4 or similiar) and if his shop would install them. He says yes but its not worth it, due to the fact that adding a bigger and powerful clutch will most likely lead to more engine wear and tear. He also said that its better if he/company orders the parts directly versus me going to an aftermarket retailer and getting the parts because his will be under warranty and mine won't. Whether or not he's trying to scam me is no concern, but I do believe he is on point with something, what do you all think?
All in all, it'll run ~3500 with parts and labor.
Ouch.
Wow.....
Go somewhere else, don’t settle. Shop around, he knows his parts cost more & he’s most likely adding a percentage to each part for profit. They do this all the time when they order parts.

3500 parts and labor is a lot. Look at part prices at vast performance, you can go rs4 with a lightweight flywheel for just under a grand. You can't tell me he wants to charge you 2500$ labor to do a clutch
