Default Just bought 2000 S4! Buy an Extended Warranty/Service Contract?

Hey everyone!

It's great to see a forum with so many active members. I just bought a 2000 S4 with 62k miles on it. Beautiful car so far. My question is...should I get an extended warranty.

The extended warranty/service contract will be through a local Audi dealer. It is 3 year/36k miles. It has a $200 per visit deductible, and costs $3,000 total. It covers mechanical breakdowns, but not wear and tear. So, it would not cover clutch, brakes, tires, etc. stuff like that.

My problem is deciding whether I should just put money away in the bank monthly or pay for this extended warranty/service contract.

The dealer I bought this car from is actually a different dealer than the one offering the extended warranty. The dealer I bought this from has recently put brand new brakes on and done about $800 worth of repairs/maintenance to the suspension. He is a specialized Audi dealer and races Audi's as well. He is willing to work with me on the price of repairs, because I bought the car from him.

So, to get the extended warranty or not? I know repairs/maintenance can be extremely expensive on this car. Please let me know what you think or if I need to tell you anything else to give an informed decision.

Thanks so much!

P.S. I will post some pics soon .

congrats on the car man. look forward to seeing it.

First question, are you planning on modding it? If you are, the warranty will be pointless anyways as they prob wont cover it then.

If it were me, i prob would pass on it and stash some money away. 3g is a lot, not to mention, that is a healthy deductible as well. Especially if you have a bit of an in with the guy to get cheaper parts and labor.

I dont know,...any aftermarket warranty place that ive generally seen...seems like pulling teeth to get them to cover anythign. always trying to find a way out.

just my opinion.

$200 per visit may be negotiable. also, research warranties on line. chances are, the dealership is a middleman. get other quotes & take them with you to dealer and they may lower price.
also, if u are able to do some repairs yourself, mite be better to bank the $
real Q: are u a gambler?

highly debatable ??, youll find lots of opinions if u search

For what it's worth. I bought a '02 S4 (55kmi) from carmax last month ($22k), and got a 3yr/36km "MaxCare" warranty ($75 deductible, $50 if you let Carmax fix it), for $1900. I thought that was worth it, I am assuming I'll hit some kind of turbo failure in the next 3 years, up till 90k....

I would check to make sure the warranty covers turbos, engine, trans, dif, etc. Some of those warranties are funny with turbo cars. I bought an extended warranty with my car, but they told me it was one of the few that would cover that engine. Also, you may be able to negotiate a lower price on the warranty. The dealership is going to make money on that, as if you were buying a car. I bought mine at cost from the dealer for alot less than $3k.

Hey all,

Thanks for the replies!

I did go with a extended warranty company called Continental Warranty. I did extensive, extensive research before buying, and the company happened to have the right price for what they offered. I know these companies can tank at any time or refuse to pay claims, so I went for a little less expensive of a premium.

I actually got 4yr/48k miles for $1,650. There was about a $150 surcharge to cover the turbos. It is a "per visit" rather than "per repair" policy, $100 deductible, BBB rated, and backed by insurance companies, not a Risk Retention group.

It's ridiculous I can even talk this lingo--I've been reading and stressing over this decision for too long. But, I figure if I DID make a mistake, at least it is not as costly as a $3,000 policy.

Thanks again all! I'm gonna get those pics posted soon!

Yeah exactly as sooks said aftermarket or extended warranty if there not cover by Audi America are pretty painful.
If u only gunna stay in the car maybe 1-2 yaers its not worth it.
Best thing u can do is get some sort of ' understanding' or ' agreement ' with who is going to do all the warranty
work to replace some things that are wear n tear so both of u r gettin some thing out of it.
It worked a treat for me with my previous car and they were the BMW dealer in town!
