Default Moving chipped Audi from NJ to California

I heard from a friend that the California emissions are much more strict than the rest of the country. I have a 2001 S4 that is chipped. Does anyone know if there is a difference between California S4s and the rest of the country? Should I have any problems with passing the emissions test? Thank you.

Hey,

I passed an acura integra GSR chipped with many mods here in los angeles cali. I had no problems with my A4 and planning on chipping as well. To be honest, I don't believe so, if you do happen to get into some trouble with emissions, let me know and i will see what i can do !!! Been here in Cali my entire life, know it like the back of my hand !!!

As far as I know, the answer is no. You'll be fine chipping the engine.

Chipping will be fine, i think its only when you start doing alot of exhaust mods(like taking out all the cats) you might have to worry about it.

No yo won't have any problems, 2001 cars get and obdII test which is simply a gas cap check, fault code read out and readiness monitor check. As long as the chip doesnt affect any of those things it will pass fine

Don’t know if this is pertinent or not, but a thought is if you have your car chipped for 93 octane you’ll be hard pressed to find anything above 91 out here in CA, and I don’t know if it will cause problems or possibly be harmful to the engine to run lower octane fuel with a chip designed for 93. I don’t know much about all this, and as I intend to chip my ‘01 S4 Avant soon as well, I searched out and recently found an APR dealer, AUDI ONLY place here in LA county called Ingolstadt West. I’m sure they can probably answer all your questions . You can email them at info@ingolstadtwest.com or call them at 1-866-GO4AUDI [464-2834]. I will be visiting them tomorrow to check them out, and have them check out my car and hopefully get a clean bill of health for intended mods. I’ve been in touch with Mike Rooney the owner, really a nice guy that really seems to know his business, and that be AUDI’s. Welcome to CA!

You're right, California is strict, but my 01 S4 came from Chicago area and haven't had a problem. You'll have to get it smogged before you can register, but just as long as you leave on your cats and don't have a cold air intake (they're basically illegal in CA) you'll pass fine
