I just put new rotors and pads on my B5S4 and the front driver side rotors and pads rub in one point of a full circle when jacked up and spinning freely. Get it on the road and it becomes a grinding sound - more pronounced when turning or in reverse.

My initial thought was the rotor must be warped. Of course StopTech thinks otherwise... so I'm entertaining suggestions.

Any ideas?

 

Could bethe rotor. Have you taken a drive in it yet? Might help seat the newrotors and pads.

 

Do you mean like its scratching/etching a circle around in one point the entire way around like a scratch going around a CD? If so that have to be a rotor flaw when it was machined for the finish.

No, not the whole way around... just at one point.
For example - if a clock face was drawn on the rotor, the rotor seems to rub with the pad only at 1:00, and nowhere else on the 'clock.'

 

Take off the rotor and make sure there is no debris on the hub that would prevent it from sitting flush against the hub. If that doesnt work then you have a poopy rotor.

 

DUST SHEILD. I can only hope that is it. You can fix it in 5 seconds with a screwdriver. When the dust shield bends in (usually from touching it slightly while changing Pads and/or rotors.) It will make an intermittent rubbing or scrapping.

Well, I found the cause of the noise today. Get this... there was a little piece of the caliper (left over from the casting?) that stuck out a little more on the driver side than on the passenger side. That little chunk was scraping the back of the wheel. I found it because the caliper began to get a marking on it - where it was rubbing - so I ground that chunk off and that was it!
What a relief!
Evidently, because the new pads are so much thicker than the previous pads, the calipers were pushed out that much more... causing the contact. The clearance is so small; I just might get some spacers.
So, anyone looking into a StopTech Stage 2 brake upgrades take heed.
