Pothole Damaged wheel bearing?
I hit a pothole of epic proportion a few weeks ago with my right front and have had a noise ever since. It was bad enough to bend the rim, wreck the tire, blow the shock, and knock the alingment out (and of course, it's not the state's, city's, or county's fault). I got new tires, new rims are on the way, as is a new Bilstein (it only had 5K miles on it!!![:@]) But, the issue that concerns me is that the tire makes an out of round noise, especially when cornering to the left. I have tried putting my spare on (non bent rim) and the noise persists. It does not change it at all. The swaybar is fine, as are the control arms and spindle, as far as I can tell. I have tried measuring the runout on the hub with the spare tire on, and cannot see more then a few thousands ofrunout, so the hub doesnt seem to be bent, but, is it possible that the pothole damaged the wheel bearing as well? The noise is constant with tire speed, and does not vary, it happens at the same point of hub rotation every time. I was thinking that the impact might have indented the races of the bearing and that the side loading of cornering to the left makes the noise more pronounced.
Thoughts?
sounds like a problem I am having. The CV joint is shot. when turning left there is a clunking noise? Also if you are slowing down, is there a clunking noise too? That would be the axle. It's only like $90 from purems. I was replacing mine but they sent me the wrong one! or you can get a pre-greased axle from raxle.com for 175. Pregreasing the bootis a B!tch! haha
look for the front right axle assembly. the boot joint kit is like $10 cheaper but I would just replace the whole thing.
good luck!

An FYI that the City is liable for damage to your car if you hit a pothole. I know two different people who had gotten reimbursed. It wasn't speedy by any means but they are liable as it is there responsibility to fix pot holes as soon as possible. Especially when they are large enough to do what it did to your vehicle. Did you take any pictures of the pothole and your damaged items? That's the first step.
yeah, I wish myself luck getting anything out of teh city/state/county. It was just outside of teh city, on a state highway, being serviced by the county. I know next time I hit something that bad, I'm going to come to a dead stop right there and not move until the cops and road commision supervisor come and take my statement and complaint. In total it did about $1200 worth of damage to the car.
