quick plea for help with 2001.5 s4
hey guys,
for the past couple months when i try and accelerate wot from a lower rpm (~2K) the car will shudder as it accelerates. almost like its losing power momentarily. for a while it was just in the lower RPMs, but its been creeping higher and higher. Thoughts on issues? Brought it to a shop and the only codes they said it was throwing involved the cat?
car has about 150k on it, all stock.
thanks for any thoughts.

I know a guy in Denver who does work solely on audi and vw and I went to him because my car does the same thing sometimes (worse when its cold out). He pulled a exhaust gas temperature sensor failure. He said that the stuttering is the ecu slightly retarding the timing because the sensor it giving in bad readings (the computer doesnt know that though). I think its the worst under WOT because thats when the most air/gas is involved making temperatures rise much more quickly and confusing the sensor.
just my thoughts, I haven't replaced the EGT or the 02s for that matter yet, but when I do I'll let you know what happens.

thanks for the reply!
In december I had the same shop replace my gas temp sensor, and its still giving me issues, wonder if I should take it back? I probably need to go read the codes myself. Any other thoughts or insights would be greatly appreciated, or ways to... fix it... cheaply (poor college student).

gas temp sensor??? There are a variety of temp sensors on these cars and they all serve a very important function, but the gas temp isn't monitored. I can assume that you mean exhaust gas temp sensor and there are two, maybe the other needs to be replaced as well (almost always a good idea to replace sensors in pairs). I just reread your post and noticed your at 150K all stock. 02 Sensors are recommended ever 100K or so. Also the stock diverter valves could be leaking boost and be getting more and more worn out over time.
If the shop didn't fix the problem I would take it back in to them. If they didn't fix it they didn't finish the job.

check all vacuum hoses
I had my mechanic replace all the hoses on my B5 S4. There are some plastic hoses in the engine bay that deteriorated so badly that they practically crunched as I squeezed it. Its probably hoses that has a crack on it and causing a leak momentarily. After this my hesitation was gone and power came back. Look for plastic hoses and squeeze them and bend them to see if they are still bendable. I had 100K when I had all of them replaced.
I hope it helps.
