Default Replacing Alternator on 2001 Audi A6 Quattro 2.8 - Need help to make a quick decision!

Hi,

I own an 2001 Audi A6 Quattro 2.8L. After having my car checked out due to it breaking down on the road, I was told I would need to replace my alternator at a cost of $800+ (including labor). After talking to some knowledgeable people, I was told it would be wise to buy a used/remanufactured alternator at a cheaper price and install it myself.

I searched Ebay and many other websites off of google and I can't make a decision on an alternator b/c of the many prices and compatabilities. I'm willing to take as much time as needed to replace it myself.

Does anyone know where I can buy a *2001* *A6 QUATTRO* *2.8* alternator at a decent price? How would I install this alternator?

800 sounds really bad - I just had recharging / battery issues and went through bunch of threads. on one thread there was a forum member who said he could sell re-manufactured alternator for around 100$ - I don't have the link here now and it might not be valid anymore but worth a shot. 800 sounds retarded for a laternator.

rockauto has remanufactured from 150-300$ + core charge. Even that sound pricey to me. I would definitely try to shop around - and yes the applications might be a little confusing but alternators are not that magical - I would think if respected parts store says one will fit - it will. For such a basic part you might want to check the pep boys/kragen's/autozone too. from another thread: "this is not the part where you have to be **** about it being the best part" - loosely quoted as I don't have the thread open.

Good luck

following is from autozone - if you are new to fixing your car - core charge is the price of the old part on your car. When you return the busted alternator the core charge is reimbursed. So the total price you pay would be 180$. The job itself shouldn't be very hard - if you are not comfortable doing it yourself (really it is not very intimidating job) ask for independent mechanics - 800 sounds really high for an alternator job.

Autozone:
About this product: Part Number: 12089 Weight: 10.3lbs. Warranty: LLT Note: 120 Amp
Premium reman. This unit is sold without a pulley. Reference tech bulletin in the box Pricing:

Unit Price: $180.99
*Core Value: $120.00
Total Price: $300.99

one more, I checked if purems or ecstuning had alternators - came up with this tool:
http://www.ecstuning.com/stage/edpd/...engine=V6+2.8L

others can comment if its really needed.

Thanks a lot guys for your help!!

I contacted a dealer friend of mine and he was able to hook me up with an Alternator for $75. Amazing deal :-).

Only issue I have right now is installing this alternator. Can anyone link me to a tutorial guide, or perhaps know how to install one and could describe the process?

Thanks a lot!!
