Default S4 questions for new buyer

Ok, as a newb to this forum, I didn't want my first thread to be a waste of everyones time. So, I came up with my first, and most troubling question. One that only you all can answer!

I live in Meridian, MS. Yeah, I know....."WHERE!!" I moved here from Phoenix if that tells you anything about what I'm used to. The crap part of this is that all of the S4s I'm looking at are at least 200 miles away from here. Needless to say, I can't personally see and drive every single one of them prior to purchase. What I want to do, instead, is build some kind of a process of elimination. I guess the most obvious way to initiate each new prospect would be with a line of questioning for the seller. I'm looking for a B5 2.7L BiTurbo Audi S4 and my area code is 39301 (if anyone cares to look at what my possibilities are). I do have a couple of months before I have to actually buy it, so I'm just checking out prospects for now and keeping an eye on prices.

What I would like, from those of you who own them, is a list of questions (model specific questions) that I should ask as a means to filtering these posibilities.

If you all could spare any time to this, it sure would help.

Thanks,
Aaron

Start with this FAQ. It has some great general information. Service records are always a plus.

That about sums it up! On basic info at least. I did not know about the TBB though. That's the kinda stuff I'm looking for. I'm a turbo nut, so not completely hopeless. Although, I gotta say, I'm not too happy about having to pull the engine to slap on new turbos!

If anyone knows where to finda DIY on theturbo swap, let me know. What I'm wonderingnow is, ....pull the engine?or raise and tilt? I mean, I'll do the work, I just want to know exactly what I'm getting myself into here. .......AND I THOUGHT THE TURBO SWAP IN THE JETTA WAS A PAIN.....On the bright side, with the engine out, the swap itself should be pretty easy.

I'm gonna surf around the site and see if I can find one posted so as not to get slammed for not looking first, but if you know where it is off hand (the DIY), feel free let me know.

Thanks for the input! I'm gonna definatelly be asking about timing belt and the TBB now. Great FAQ thread!

Ok. Found this. This doesn't look that bad. With the right tools on hand and a GREAT memory, I'm talking elephant type memory (or a printer, duh), this is a one afternoon job.

I'm guessing that doing the DPipes and Turbos at the same time would be the prefered method???

Depends on the situation, you can swap out DP's with out the removing the engine. So that's up to you, it easier though.

There is a way to swap turbos without pulling the engine, you just have to pull the entire front end off to be able to wrench. Another question is if the seller is the primary owner, one owner generally means the car was taken care of because of the higher mileage. With several owners you cant tell how the car was treated and people just keep trading it in. If its higher mileage check when the last timing belt and water pump were replaced since its a hefty maintenance charge!

Id like to add.. Learn from my mistake and (if its an S4 with over 75K miles, which it most likely will be) make sure to ask if it has had its 75K mi major service done.. This is a $1,600 - $2,000 job..
