Question Sanity Check - B5 S4 clutch replacement cost?

Hi all,

I'm new here. After a lot of searching for this topic, I only found really old threads and I'm not sure if prices for these kinds of repairs have changed a lot since then.

My garage is quoting me for $4k to replace the clutch and flywheel on my 2000 B5 S4. That sounds a little rich to me.

I'd appreciate any info on what's a normal price to have clutch + flywheel (just stock) replaced. And would also love to hear if I indeed should get the flywheel replaced along with the clutch. My S4 has about 118k miles on it.

Thanks in advance!

I'd suggest getting the stock flywheel resurfaced. Then look into what clutch you want. For a little more than a stock clutch u can get yourself a much beefier clutch. Say $500 for a clutch, $80-$120 for a resurface... Can't really talk to labor rates, but anything over $2000 labor and bearings from a legit shop would be unreasonable to me.

I called a local dealer just for grins last year to see about the cost of a clutch replacement for an 01 1.8T and was told $1500 parts and $1600 labor, so I can see $4000 being in line with that. Insane, but in line.

Dealer is almost always going to be 200-500 too high. Clutch on the a4 is 8.5 hrs I think. I paid just over 600 for labor at an indie shop due to lack of time/tools/experience 2 yrs ago. I'd do it on my own now. Oh btw stock replacement was over a grand.

If it helps, Jan 2007 my indie shop installed an AWE stage 2 clutch, lightweight flywheel, pilot bearing, and tranny/transfer case/rear diffy fluids. Total around $2400.

Default Thanks

Thanks for the replies everyone.

In case it helps anyone: I ended up getting the job done for a little less, but still around 3400 (Had to make a decision before a bunch of these answers came in). It was at an indie shop, but judging from your responses, the price seems more along the lines with what a dealer would ask.

Just bought an 2004 S4. The clutch is slipping with only 45K miles. I suspect the pressure plate may be weak but before I take the transmission out I'd like to get some suggestions on a better, stouter clutch / pressure plate assembly. May have been customer abuse but I'd like to upgrade from stock if anyone has any suggestions?
