Default Timing belt replacement help

I put on a new timing belt and for some reason it tried to jump off. Everything seemed fine when I rotated the crank a few times to make sure everything lined up but I'm guessing that there was too much tension on the belt. The old belt had a pretty good amount of slack while the new belt was tight everywhere. Can someone tell me how to gain more slack on the new belt?

Thanks

what book did you use for you information?? the belt is meant to be tight not slack does it line up right??, the belt will whine if its too tight so it will need to be adjusted buy the tensioner till its quiet but not too slack

there should be enough slack in the belt to twist it about 90 degrees.

If it's jumping off, it's to loose. To tight will cause a lot of drag & noise.
