My 00 6 spd won't go into reverse. It's not that it grinds or anything going into gear. It simply wont move left past first gear. I checked the linkage at the shifter side and can't see anything wrong. I'm thinking it may be an issue in the linkage down at the tranny but I wanted to get a couple opinions before ripping into it. Anyone have a similar problem??

 

Happens a lot, and with first and second gear, usually you need to get a tranny rebuild.

 

Check your engine & trans mounts, if they are deformed to much, it will be hard to get the car in gear.

 

i had a similar problem. and with the b5 s4's it'll happen. even if you don't have to get your tranny rebuilt now, you should consider doing so. stasis is the best place to do this tranny rebuild. i would think about doing this if i were you.

 

mehhh, if it was the mounts wouldn't it all the gears to some extent?

I was kinda fearing the idea of rebuilding the trans, I've put way too much money into the S4 lately and I've been neglecting the other toys. Ah well, i guess I'll have to bite the bullet.

 

personally, of all your rides, i think the s4 is the best and you should take care of it. and if you did put all that money in, then rebuilding your tranny would definitely be worth it!! make sure you get it done by stasis

 

Even though you are convinced on the tranny rebuild..I had a similar problem but I couldn't get into any gears with the car on..and no reverse even with teh car off. after an expensive tow, my mechanic starts it up, and nothing was wrong...he said sometimes you get caught in btwn gears when parking...just put it in nuetral, roll it back a few feet...then try again...it should get into reverse no problem..but it sounds like you have a bigger problem than i did...so I'm no help..is uck
