Default What are the reliability issues with 01-02 S4s?

I am contemplating one as a daily driver and winter car. I have heard a lot of bad things about the reliability, but not specifics. My last Audi was an 95 A6 which I got rid of at 70k miles. It had no issues except for a bad seat heater. The other cars on my list are the late model Acura TLS and the Nissan Maxima but the AWD would be a real plus. I want to keep the car basically stock. I don't expect Jap reliability but I don't want a money pit either. Can I avoid the typical list of problems with a thorough pre purchase inspections? Should I maybe avoid the S altogether and go the the A4 2.8?

If you want the most reliable of the two Audis, then go with the A4 2.8 engine. If you want a luxo-0sport model, then go with the S4. Whatever you may be hearing about reliability issues might very well be heightened gossip. The S4v is a great car - it is a German performance sedan and it requires disciplined attention. It is not a Japanese, beat-the-hell-out-of-me-and-I'll-keep-running car. You must treat it with the respect and care you should to a finely tuned vehicle. That will require some down time for maintenance and some cash out of pocket, but it won't break you as long as you maintain a regular schedule of maintenance. You can't let something wait on the S4 like you can on a Toyota. Go with a pre-inspected certified Audi and you will be assured of getting a great used S4. Take care of it and it will reward you with a great ride!
