You Call This Sound?
A regular sub will do you well. Crutchfield is running a special I think, they had the Boston Acoustics G5 series on sale (2 for 1) and I put two G512's in the trunk, now I don't worry as much about when I get around to replacing the 12 or so speakers, amp, and head unit, in one go.
Welcome to B6 world! Curiously, how much did your insurance take a hit for if you don't mind my asking, going from an A4 to an S4?

As for my insurance, it's looking like I won't end up paying more (maybe even less). I guess I was overpaying before. 6 month premium will probably be in the $600-700 range. But I have until April 8th before I need to actually add the S4 to my policy, in the meantime, both it and the B5 are covered. My goal is to sell the B5 before I have to insure the S because I can't afford to insure them both.
We've got 10 speakers, the 10th is the sub. Some are Bose, some aren't...mine isn't. I think it's probably a 6.5", but so far I haven't been able to find every useful specs on it. Harman amp though.
Mixing Bose components with aftermarket stuff isn´t a good idea, it will sound like crap.
I replaced my whole Bose system (after some speakers blew) in my b5.
Well, i like it loud.
Headunit: JVC KW-AVX800 + an extra Blaupunkt DVD player in the trunk
Speaker Amp: Kenwood KAC-7404
Speaker: front: Focal 130 K2 - back: rear doors Focal 165 K, rear deck Focal 165 K
Sub Amp: Hifonics Brutus BXi MkII 1600D
Subwoofer: Soundstream T4-15 Tarantula

I am not a fan of the Bose stuff. IMO the BANG & OLUFFSEN option is much better.

When did you get the B6 S4? All I remember is you got in an accident with the b5 wagon and then I dont remember seeing you on the forums lol. I just got myself a B5 S4 I couldnt leave my fav. body style. Its got 65k original miles, 6 speed
^^That's pretty cool. Lot's of sound!
But I'll only replace the system with something that can be installed in place of stock components which is why I want to start with a sub...even an 8" would be an upgrade!
I died! No, not really, but right around the time of my accident I was promoted to Operations Manager of three restaurants and had very little free time during the adjustment...still don't, really, but so what if I'm on the forums at work, who's gonna say sh*t
I got the S4 on Friday the 13th

So where's the stock sub?
And you guys that replaced your stock systems did you just leave the top tweeter part empty or do aftermarket ones fit fine there? And do the aftermarket head units look out of place at all or no? Cause my driver side speakers sometimes don't work until I turn it up loud, and some times they sound really fuzzy as well. It's not to the point were it's driving me crazy yet but I think it may get there fairly soon. I'm sure buying a replacement factory speaker would be expensive, but if I were to go aftermarket I'd have to essentially buy a whole system right.

I used two-way speaker systems so i replaced the top tweeter in the front door too, i had to trim the brackets a little, but it wasn´t too hard. The main speaker in the front door needs an adapter too.
The stock sub in my b5 was located in the trunk behind the passenger side covering.
Because of the HU´s, it depends of the look and style of the headunit, but usually they look good.
If you have the bose system installed, it won´t work good with any aftermarket components, so its recommended to replace the whole system.

I've gotten lazy lately, and I have found it easier to get the results I want (read: perfection and good looks) by taking it to somewhere I know does good work, and either helping them do the work (I try to take it to friends businesses) or going in after and touching up. It makes me feel like I'm doing something, and at the same time allows me to be lazy and do as much work as back when I had my neon.
yes, yes, I had a dodge neon... for 3 days and rolled it. I had two Aiwa home speakers, in boxes, wired to my rear deck speakers, bungee corded into the back corners of the trunk. Oh to be 16 again... (Hey, I live in Vermont, that was the most bumpin' stereo any redneck's ever seen!). Then I drove a dodge Aries station wagon, 1986! Baby blue and had a Monsoon home theater system in it. Then I got the truck (a mint 1992 Nissan, uhh, "Truck" with 65,000 miles on it and no rust anywhere, this was before Nissan even named their trucks, it was a 2WD automatic 4cyl, and it came from the factory with less ground clearance than my Aries) and did it right, Dumped about $2500 into an A/V system with a PS2 in it. After that though, I decided I never wanted to do that much work myself again. Especially after the nightmare that was my Subaru. I love the Audi because alot of the upgrading is either so simple its brainless (for me anyway), or so complicated I don't even bother doing it myself. Theres no oh-crap-what-have-I-gotten-myself-into half way through the job.
As far as the Avant subwoofer size or location, I dunno. I have the sedan, and its in he rear deck. I would guess, though, based on experiences with prior cars, that probably drivers side of the trunk, on the side. I culd be way off though, and if the Avants get the same size as the sedan, probably 8 inches or so. I left mine in when I added my 12 inch Boston's, for now atleast, to keep a smaller sub for mid-lows and set the crossover on the amp that powers the Boston's a little lower. I'm an audiosnob though, a poor one at best, but still an audiosnob. Eventually when I get motivated I'll find a half way competent dealer and have them gut and replace the whole thing. I'm also thinking of getting one of them there fancy schmancy Eclipse in dash DVD/nav/HDD double-din head units... The problem with bose, as has been already stated, is its all or nothing.
