Problem- auto trans not shifting 1st to 2nd in drive, but would shift when tiptronic used or if or paddle shifters used. Vag scan showed intermittent fault in brake light switch, even though brakes lights were apparently functioning fine. Logic would dictate that a brake light switch would not affect the transmission shifting. I was having nightmares about servicing the transmission and buying $800 of shift solenoids. But I decided to start the process by fixing faults first to eliminate possible causes. Throw logic out the window! Replaced the brake light switch and car now shifts PERFECTLY. Before you go servicing your transmission or replacing shift solenoids inside the transmission, consider replacing the brake light switch first. Apparently the brake light switch affects multiple functions, including transmission shifts. $13 from Autozone. Just want to say THANKS to all the contributors in the forum - you've saved me thousands of $ and pointed me in the right direction on many repairs! Hope my experience helps some of you out there!!
