Default 5-speed Tranny problems

While on a 200 mileroad trip, my Audi 100 would not shift into 5th gear. I stopped in a toll plaza, went to 1st, attempted todrive off and the trans locked down. Icome off the clutch a couple of times until the car was able to move. I checked for leaks or loose parts, none found. I then had to release the clutch a few times to get it going. There was a thump sound each time it wouldfree up and coulddrive. At every stop it locked down.I drove the last 190 miles in 4th gear. Has anyone encountered this problem? This is a Audi 100CS 2.8L, 5-speed trans with 98K miles

Lift the front of vehicle, started and went to 1st gear and rattling noise started after clutch engaged. I then went through gears and got to 5th and rattling worsen. I then went to netural with the same rattlingwhile the clutch was engaged. Could this be the pilot bearing giving me this problem?

Checked shifter and was OK, then I decided to drain the oil. Found metal gear teeth in trans. Should I have it rebuilt?
