Default Check Engine Light/ Re-start problems

I could sure use your help, again. My 92' S4 starts fine. While driving, the "Check Engine" light will come on for a bit, then go off. It may come back on depanding on how long I am driving. The car seems to run fine, until I Switch off the ignition. When I try to re-start the car, it will not! Almost seems like the fuel pump stops working, because the car turns over but there is either no spark, or fuel.

After letting it sit and cool down(usually in about 1 1/2 hours) the car starts up again, like nothing was ever wrong. Until I turn it off again and the symptoms repeat again. Very Frustrating.

I took the advice of the operations manual and shunted the contacts inside the fuse box in the engine compartment, for the specified time. The "check Engine" light flashes for awhile, but the display will not generate a code which throretically should tell me what component in the Emissions System has failed. Do you know what problem my car has???

Thanks for your support.

check the temp. sensors/swiches that give signal to the computer and/or fuel system ... if your car has an after-run cooling system, check if it works like it's intended to work
