Well there is an update to the noise issue which in the end was minor to what else has gone wrong. This spring it started to leak oil, and developed a strange vibration and jerk when shifting in first gear. I took it to a local shop that works on German imports. The upside is the leak is the cam adjuster seal, and the mystery noise was in fact a bad lifter, on the passenger side front of the engine. The bad news is the Transmission is going bad and will need a rebuild. when under any sort of heavy acceleration it slips and jerks badly. I am just gutted as while it is a great looking car in great shape, is not worth the cost of fixing the trans. A sad day indeed. Looks like it will be the big Audi Graveyard in the sky . It would seem that the previous owner must have driven it hard and hung it up wet as none of this should be going on at 88k miles.
