running rough..
Hey,
I worked on my 1985 Audi Coupe GT since i got it.
So far this is what I did:
new water pump
new thermostate
new valve cover gasket
new alternator
new battery
new timing belt
Last night I was driving, and at a light the car startted to run a little rough.. it was a little shaky and accelerator wasnt as responsive. I drive a little more, then the car just dies.
I try to start it, its trying, really hard lol, backfires, etc... won't start, or it would start for a few secs and I rev it and it would sound like **** and die.
I went this morning and replaced all 5 spark plugs. The car started up fine, sounds a little difference, kinda louder, but still runs a little rough...
I am thinking it's something to do with the fuel system, but I don't know what to look for.. I don't want to spend money on having a mechanic look at over and tell me that my freakin fuel distributer is dead lol and charge me $700 for labor and parts.
This just happened all in one night, before that the car was running great. Any help would be appreciated.

I am not trying to insult you but if you changed the timing belt you should know what I mean by skipping a tooth on the belt or the distributor. It's easy to do and many people have done it including myself. You need to recheck that your distributor (via intermediate shaft and sprocket), crank sprocket and cam sprocket all align properly on their respective marks for the #1 cylinder. These timing reference marks are not exactly super precise. I have not worked on the 2.22 in a long time but I know that it based on the 1.7-1.8 4-cyl design and might have an intermediate sprocket for the distributor. The 2.3 5-cyl doesn’t use an intermediate shaft and drives the distributor directly of the cam.

well I didn't change the belt myself, i had it done when my mechanic replaced my water pump.
Also I figured out my problem. My distributor cap was broken along with the rotor... I didn't notice that until I actually looked at it closely.. I replaced it with a new one, including a new rotor and the car works fine now..

Glad you found the problem! Like I figured it had to be timing related but a broken rotor and cap? Somebody had to have whacked it! The Bosch cap is quite thick and not exactly easy to break.
