Strange Clicking NOISE?!?
Hi,
I've got an Audi 80 1994 , automatic 2.6l, built in immobilizer and central locking ...
Ok here is the deal ... I get into the car put the key in, start the engine ... and some bizzare clicking noise starts
(click ... click .... click ...) sounds like it's coming from the gearbox because I can clearly hear it inside.
As soon as I touch the brakes clicking stops ...
Ok release the brake, clicking starts again ... I shift the gear to any speed ... it stops .. I am driving there is no clicking.
I stop on a trafic light , put gear into neutral ...and when I press the brake there is a single click sound.
So each time I press the brake I hear a single click , like a switch ... so it only does constant clicking in Park.
So I assume its somthing to do with automatic gearbox connecting to the engline and disconnecting.
Any ideas what it could be and what should I do ?
Thanks.

We purchased Joey's Cabriolet above. It was a brake solenoid clicking due to a problem with the brake lights. The third brake light was pulsating to the clicking noise.
We looked at the brake light bulbs and noticed one of them was wrong. We replaced with correct bulb and the clicking stopped.

yep that was the problem for me as well .. they advised me to take apart the gear box lol ... I just changed the brakes light bulb which has died and clicking was gone.
But I still have a strange klunk sound when auto gear change... shifting is not smooth .... had the same problem on some other cars years back and I was told that's normal for older automatics, but audi wasn't doing this year ago, was shifting smooth.
Any ideas?

Hey, we just completed a transmission flush which helped a lot with the clunking. There was barely any transmission fluid and the seal was leaking in the Cabriolet we just purchased.
There is also a "update" from a while back that pertained to erratic shifting, clunking, etc. Will have to look into how to perform an update.
