Default 1997 A3 Temperature gauge erratic

Hello all

Took my car in to my local specialist (Marlow VW) to have a problem with poor acceleration checked out. That turned out to be the good old Air Mass Meter. When they connected it to the computer it told them there was a fault with the temperature sensor, so they replaced that as well.

Ever since, the temperature showing on the gauge has been erratic. Before it would rise to 90 and sit there, bang on. Since the 'repair' the gauge rises much more slowly. It will reach 90 when in slow traffic or idling, but drops down - typically to between 70 & 80 - when driving at normal speeds.

I've taken the car back 3 times and they claim they've tried several sensors (apparently there are different types), but this problem is still there and they don't know what else they can do. They don't think it's an issue.

I don't think they're messing me around - they've been decent about it - but I'm pretty sure this is not correct behaviour. Is there anything else, besides the temp sensor, that could cause this behaviour?

Thanks for your help.
Simon
