Default HELP! 2001 A3 1.8T 'Safe?'

Hi guys!

I'm in a different country to my car at the mo - my girlfriend is telling me the following is happening:

1. Battery was flat the other day, jump started ok but has been ok ever since (still original battery)
2. Car is a bit down on power
3. When she switches the stereo on, it shows 'SAFE' and the stereo doesn't come on
4.She says that when she turns the ignition on, there are 'four beeps' somewhere in the back of the car!?

Dudes, I'm taking symptoms from a chick and I know they're a bit vague, but can anyone explain what might be wrong please? Can a duff/under-performing battery cause these symptoms? Appreciate any comments before she wheels it down the local garage and gets herself (me!) ripped off!

Thanks for any help!

I've never had a battery last 7 years ... good job. With that said, I'm guessing the battery isn't taking a full charge from the alternator. Time to replace it. As for the "SAFE" indicator on the radio, whenever power is lost to the radio, it goes into a "safe" mode (this is to discourage thieves from stealing it). To get it back into playing mode, you should have a code specific to your radio that has to be entered into it by the push buttons on the radio. The owners manual has instructions on how to do this and the code should have been furnished to you by the dealer. Check your manual for a "radio" card.

Rowdy - thank you - you da man! Been checking things out since I posted and you're right - girlfriend causing unneccessary panic! Nothing wrong with motor and all sorted - typical 'chick with car' scenario!

Battery is on last legs, though, and will prob need changing before winter.

Thanks for reply though mate ;-)
