Low resale value?

Low resale value?
Why does AUDI have such a low resale value compared to BMW, Mercedes and even Lexus?
Is it because the brand hasn't reached that pinnacle yet? I was looking on eBay and was shocked at how cheap 2006 A3s are going for! [:@]
I wonder if this trend will change now that the A5 and R8 is out - maybe help expand Audi's image (?)

RE: Low resale value?
Audis do seem to depreciate rather quickly but only at first.. Once there a few years old their depreciation seems to slow down. For example it seems like the range of b5 audi a4s from 96-01 are all between 5 and 10k. where the difference between a 07 a3 and an 04 can be much more drastic in relation. Yea BMWs seem to hold their value forever. It must be the density of their range.

From what I've seen Mercedes is at least as bad. Don't know about Lexus. BMWs do really well, especially the 3 series. The only thing I can think of that does better is the Porsche 911.

RE: Low resale value?
Forbes had an interesting article on this a while back, but I couldn't find the link.
In percentage terms, the A3 does worse than many other cars in the first 2 years. However, overall cost of ownership is competitive if you keep the car for 2 or 3 years. That's because even though the depreciation percentage is high, it is on a fairly low base number. Thus, in real dollar terms, depreciation on higher priced 3 series may be comparable. I don't know anything about the US used car market, but here in Taiwan, the cost of depreciation in dollar amounts is very similar for an A3 and a BMW 120 or even the 130i.

Yes, Low resale value on the A3
I can confirm this. When I was looking at an A3 3.2 S line to lease - 3 years, 15K miles per year. Every dealer around wanted $3-3,500 down with a monhtly payment. Are you ready for this? A monthly payment of 687!!! No deal.
This is why the payment is so high for the lease. Poor resale value for this car. Shame
