What color did you get and why?
Moro Blue - Beige Leather interior. Other choice was Ocean Blue with Beige. Wife liked the darker blue better. I think - everything I've driven has pretty well had that color combination.

i originally wanted to get the ocean blue but when i got to the dealer they had this brilliant red 2007 2.0T with the s line package and i instantly fell in love with it (i've only had it for about two weeks, i'll be 18 in 15 days, so this is my first car!) it has the open sky system and black leather interior, so its nearly all red and black, and i think its just gorgeous. I LOVE this car.

Welcome.
White w/ Open Sky. Really liked the way it looked. And now that the windows are tinted....well lets just say that daddy likey.
Yeah, the white shows some road dirt, but thats nothing a little washing can't take care of.

Yeah, I have the Ocean Blue. I wanted a darker color but not black (I love the black and I've had black before but it looks like a$$ in the winter, covered in salt spray). I haven't had the car long enough to know what it looks like with winter salt spray all over it.
As for now, I think the Ocean Blue looks great, especially now that I replaced those d@mn amber lenses in the bumper with ECS smoked lenses! And I plan to get the windows tinted in the spring...
Anyway, per your question, I really haven't noticed any swirl marks in the finish. And if I did have scratches, they don't stand out.
Hope that helps...

First car and 17??? Man, I was driving a $500 beetle at your age. I guess you can't just fix your car by spending $4 on a new set of points? There is something to be said for an easy and cheap car at that age.
Welcome.

I have the Ocean Blue... I have had it almost a year and it has never been through a car wash or had a brush touch it. Only hand washes! NO swirls...nice shine with subtle metallic. My car deals with hot summers, snowy cold winters and dirty back roads.
I have 2 products that I swear by (after some trials) I detail my car very frequently... I have recently discovered a "soap" thats keeps my car shiny for weeks. Before, I was waxing everytime (or every other) to keep it shiny. the soap is "high foam car wash by Rain.x If you know the rainx windshield treatment you will know that water beads off like it was a ducks back. Well picture this on your paint job! The other product I use is the nanowax by eagle one. brilliant spray wax that is easy to apply in hot sun or on a wet car. the new soap find has decreased my need to wax...now I just do it every 3 or 4 washes.
Check for my post "Details on Detailing" coming soon. I have made it a mission to keep my car swirl free and oh so shiny.
Why Ocean Blue? looking back on my cars and their colours....they seem to be blue. I have an 84 rabbit GTI almost the same colour. well except for the lime green (Isotope) 01 1.8T Beetle I had. Im stuck on blue.
Other great colour combos i liked and considered. Lava/beige white/ beige or grey. definetly a light interior. Oh and that colour that is almost brown (can't remember colour name)
;-)

It was a toss up between Lava and Silver. I have a '01 BMW with a very dark blue/black/slight purple color (Orient Blue Metalic) and didn't want a dark color again. A detail on that car is a half-day job for me.
I really like the pearl effect with the metalic on the Lava, but in the end I went with Silver. I had a Silver Miata that was really easy to keep clean. With the Open Sky black glass roof and the silver paint, I was transported back to my Miata (which had a black top).
I do get tired of the popularity of silver, particularlyon German cars. But since I live the Central Valley of CA., it is either dust, pollen or both. My experience is that Silver does a good job under these conditions. White does too.
Here are some crazy large pictures that I posted to another web site(page down when you get there):
