Well I'm late to the party as usual.
I just went from a 99.5 B5 2.8 to a 2.0 B7 and observe the following. The 2.8 is smooth, while the 2.0 will let you know when it idles, that there's only four pistons. But when the turbo spools up, I think the stock 2.0 would beat a stock 2.8. Mileage with the 2.0 is better by a couple of MPG. Best I ever had with 2.8 was a little over 30, while the 2.0 is doing 30 on 93 octane winter gas, so it should see 32-33 in summer. I realize that you picked up a 1.8, but a chip will make the 1.8 stronger than a stock 2.0, so I threw in my .02

my 01 1.8TQM gets a solid 30MPG even in the mountains of WV... its definately more choppy/not as smooth as the V6 though but I'm happy with it and its bone stock engine wise.. id like to do a CAI soon though...
Hi
Before l go and rant l just picked up a 3.0 quattro vert when l was orig looking for a 1.8Tvert .
I drove the 1.8t vert 05 and it felt fine until l tried to get onto a highway and then l decided to try the 3.0 also a vert and 05. But this one was a Quattro so it's 200lbs heavier and the gearing is different because of the Quattro. It was better, in fact good enough for my wife to get onto a highway safely.
A 1.8t goes 0-60 in 8.6 sec a 3.0 same year only shaves a 1/2 sec off but has a better low end. 2005
That is my 2 cents

but I about lost my damn chair out from under me...lolz
Hi
While the 1.8t can be made to be a pocket rocket people tend to forget what the Audi is all about. A quattro with snow tires is like billy goat in the snow and that says a lot. But no matter how fast a modded 1.8t can go,the question is how fast can it slow down at 145mph? And did l mention how fast can it make a turn?
Look at it this way a car is a tool and it takes all kinds of tools to make toolbox!
Alan
PS I ran a ricer who not only stayed with me but was pulling ahead when we were both forced to slow down because of slower traffic. I had no problem but the ricer had no shot and was forced to take a chance and go into the oncoming lane to go around a slower moving (70mph) vehicle. We met up a little further and we both pulled over. He showed me his engine and probably had more $ under his hood then what l spent for my C5. No he didn't have a bottle. So the answer is even though his ricer was faster he didn't have the brakes to safely slow down.
