1st Gear Whine
Tranny fluid should be a full synthetic. Pretty sure you need 75W90.
Where are these prices coming from? You could replace the whole tranny for under $3k US.
Your brief description sounded normal to me, but if you have taken it to shops and they hear an unusual noise, I am wondering if you do have a problem. Tough thing about the forum is that no one can hear the noise you are talking about. What did the shops say was wrong with it?

check the oil level in the gearbox and add some molyslip

Yeah Giltraps price is a rip! I took their German Technician for a drive. He thought perhaps hardening had worn off first gear. But, I suspect they change parts for perfection sake, with little regard for cost.
