ok ill give you that it can be tuned to a bit of power in stock mode but really the intake valves are small and fragile. not to mention the TB always breaking and sludge being its homemade kryptonite. but yes i have driven a 1.8t and i love that kick you get when the turbo spools.

and as far as the gas mileage, a chipped 2.0 will not get better gas mileage, it will be alot worse depending on how you drive... you cant add 40hp and 50lbs/tq and except to get better gas mileage.

the 3.2 will be smoother, no doubt. theres a reason thats audi's more "luxurious" version of the a4. the 2.0 will not nearly accelerate as smooth as the 3.2, as far as ride quality it should be the same, depending on whether you get sport suspension or normal suspension.

you totally sound like you need the 3.2, it just seems like what your looking for. the 2.0 is more of a tuner's car, not a car that you drive 800 miles every week. its just true.
