Get a Miata and throw a LS1 in it

 

An american small block would be out of the question because of how the motor mounts are set up, you would have to cut a huge deal out of the subframe and weld in new mounts and cut out the old ones, that and you wouldn't have quattro.
I do know a guy that put in an old 4.2L engine from an A8 into a 98 A4, it was still a huge pita and he had to change the tranny, but it was a freaking monster when he was done.

 

A stroked 1.8t to a 2.2L and a 35r would be a beast. Even getting a VR6 12v would kick *** like 034. Both would be more fun than a V8 from whereever

because that car has the 12v v6 in it. There is little to no aftermarket support for it, and it's not going to get you anywhere near the gains dollar for dollar that a built 1.8t will.

It's whyI have a 96 a4 that's clean clean clean but no longer has a motor in it. My 12v is on an engine jack in the corner of my garage.

 

I thinkit's a sick idea and wish I could do it with my car, but I wouldn't use an LS1, everyone uses them, do someting fun and original, through in an old I5 from a urquattro, that would be real dope.



BTW, rsrbljan I really like your car, do you have some more pics you could through up to give another 12v er some ideas to go with and also where did you get your Ecodes?

I'm trying to wrap up mydash this winter, and come springmy motor work starts. I need to find a pre 99.5 1.8t donor car with motor, harness, and ECU. I'll be building a 1.8 BT setup, and if i can find it right, an a6 6-speed tranny to mate to it.

I'm amazed at how difficult it is to find these cars in yards. no pick and pull places in central ohio have anything. I noticed you're in Cincy, so O-H baby... I'm not a far jump away in Columbus.I started to tear into the 12v with 185k miles, and the motor is unbelievably clean and within tolerance. I have all records since new, and the only work done was new gaskets on the top end. I am going to put everything back together with new gaskets top and bottom side, that wayI can either sell it with confidence, or put it back into the car as a driver.I firmly believe this motor has another 80k miles in it. It's on it's 3rd timing belt already. It's a testament to Audi Engineering and the 12v motor.

I almost have my wife sold on letting me put back together and keep the 12v as a daily driver, and then just buying an s4 to mod as a future "investment"... but something about that doesn't feel right, seems like the easy road. Plus that would land me an additional car, and my wife JUST got me to downsize to 2. LOL. So we'll see.

VR6 and V6 are 2 completely differnt things. The VR6 is almost a inline 6 and has a huge aftermarket and makes turboing the car so much easier. Just look up 034motorsport's car

 

Yeah, that 034 car is INSANE!!!!!

034 is selling the adapter plates for the transmission now as well, and they're saying they'll even fab up a bolt in engine mount system. they're not listing price, they said to call. it does require modification to the subframe, and a custom oilpan... if i remember right they used a cut down toureg pan.

the vr6 motors are CHEAP still too. sonds like alot, but if you have time, some fab skill, and a moderate budget, you can build a monster.
