Default Alternator?

To anyone whos removed the alternator on a 97-00 1.8t

I have the top and bottom bolts out, and it swivels from side to side about an inch. What is keeping it in place? I cant slide it out with any amount of force, unless I need to use a breaker bar, in which case Id hate to think would it would be like getting it back on...??? Anyone?

I have to get the alt out to get to the water pump to replace.

I PM'ed you but did you get the lower bolt out that the alternator swivels on? You have to get the fan out of the way because the bolt is huge! If you did get it out you may need a pry bar to get it out, its a really tight fit.

Nevermind, I just got it. Yes I removed the fan/clutch pulley to get the lower altbolt out. Thanks.

Damn... What a pita.... Finally the pump is in and most everything is hooked back up except for the lock carrier. That alternator/water pump mounting configuration is a POS. Whatever, Ill have to finish tomorrow cuz my wife decided to throw a party.
