I have a 2002 audi a4 3.0 6 speed manual that i dont knowwhat is wrong, i havesome converter issues, my 02 sensor went about a month ago, been meaning to replace it but havent had the time. Now, when i bring the car up to around 3000 rpms it sounds like someone threw a handfull of nuts into the pistions on the driverside of the engine, sort of a rattling noise, i thought maybe my converter let go , but the only trouble code im getting is converter efficiency and o2 sensor on the cat. A non audi dealer said it wouldnt be either of those , maybe something to do with detonation, but not timing. Has anyone ran into this before , im completely lost.

 

If the honeycomb mesh in the converter is falling apart it can rattle. How many miles? Cats are covered under waranty for 8years 80k miles. You could also have a camshaft adjuster issue on that bank, but i would expect faults for it if that was causing the noise.

 

it has 96000 so im past the warranty but i think its the cat because like you said i would have other fault codes. If i have a converter efficiency fault would that pretty much mean i need a new one?

 

Yep thats the only fix for a bad cat is replacement.

 

search "death of a 3.0" on www.audizine.com in the b6 forum... some of the 3.0s are having some kind of cam problem that ends up destroying the enginearound 75-100k, another guy on here had the same problem about a month ago... i referred him to the same link and that was his problem as well.. he didnt have warranty though[:@]

alright, i checked out that link, it doesnt quite sound exactly what is happening but im going to get it to the dealership just to be safe, the good thing is i have an extended warranty so if it does crap out i wont be totally screwed, thankyou for your input, ill let you know hwat happens.
