I've got a 98. I found a wire that looks similar to the one in the pictures in the link but when I openned it up i found 4 wires, 2 brown, 1 purple and 1 green with a yellow stripe. Did I not find the correct wire?
It's not a black/white wire, it's a plastic cover on the antenna. Since yours is under the back seat, I doubt the plastic cover is on it. So just look for a antenna, it should be the wire that DOESN'T connects to anything else. It might be a clear small gauge wire.

You think it matters if you use a thicker wire than 22g? I used something closer to 18g... not sure exactly. Definitely thicker than the original remote wire...
I didn't solder, either... but I did intertwine them many times, and wrapped it tightly with electrical tape.
My range is improved a bit... but not drastically.
It shouldn't matter, but it doesn't need to be heavy wire. Hopefully you STRIPPED the wires bare, then twisted them? Make sure you feed it through the bumper from passanger side to drivers side.
