Default boost questions

Hey everybody..

I have an 01 1.8t quattro w/ about 81k on it. I just got a boost gauge and a forge dv valve. I have had the APR chip for a while now. Before I put the dv in I installed the boost gauge. The gauge is a VDO analog negative and positive "TURBO" gauge. At idle it stays at about -25 and under full boost w/out the chip on it maxes out at 5psi. With the chip on it maxes at 6psi. After I put the dv in and replaced some cracked vacuum hoses, I get about 6psi w/ the chip off and about 7-8 with it on.

Am I crazy or is this low? I have read quite a few posts of people on this board and other stating that they get between 12 - 22 psi with an APR chip on. Am I reading the gauge wrong, maybe I tapped the boost in the wrong place?

I tapped the boost from the small 5" line from the intake manifold to the FPR. I saw quite a few posts as well as the instructions from the gauge that said this was the spot.

Thanks!

Yeah sounds a little low to me. I would start checking for boost leaks. There are many methods for this if you search and some common areas they happen. I have my boost gauge tapped where you do and that is a perfectly fine place. Also what spring color are you running in your Forge? You most likely will want to use the mid grade one with your current mods. Forget which color one that is.

limp mode would keep you in 5-7 psi… i would check for codes first… you might have a code even if your CEL is off

20-25 hg is normal for vac/at idle.
Definately scan for fault codes.

ok - I thought it was suposed to be a little lower 17-19. I hate all my vac/boost system - maybe its time to just redu the whole f-in thing.

To add to this I had a CEL on for a while. I got it read the other day and it was a p0411. I found here in the forums it was the hose in the back by the firewall blah blah blah.. Anyhow it was broken and I replaced it. I reset the light, and have driven about 250 miles now. Still the same thing.

How can I test for codes if the light is off? I have 2 different obd ii code reading tools and neither say anything.

I will search for the recommended areas to look for boost leaks, and check those out. I have the green spring in it (the lowest one) I thought about putting in the next one up but didn't think it was necessary. I'll give that a try too.

Any other ideas?

Thanks for all your help!

VAG-COM would be your best bet. I beleive it will show you codes that a regular OBDII scanner wouldnt. I currently have an OBDII scanner and ive ordered a VAG-COM plug-in via USB because the regular scanner just didnt give me enought info on certain things.

It was the small vacuum hose coming from the DV that wasn't even connected to anything on the other side! I must of tugged it loose when putting on the new DV. Thanks for all the help!
