Default Buying an A4 Quattro

Hey all...

Just made up my mind to buy an Audi which is a switch for me because I am a loyal BMW owner but I'm sure I will fall in love with this car as soon as I get it.

I do have a quick question though...

Under Deceleration without breaking, for example, like coming off the highway on an off-ramp. I hear a hum coming from the rear of the car, it increases and decreases with speed and it changes pitch when the car is turned side to side. I am a little worried about purchasing the car because of the this problem. Please help me out.

I'm sure it has to do with the rear differential, rear wheel bearings or maybe even rear tires... is there any way to specifically determine the problem? Any way I can know exactly what I am getting into before I purchase the car.

welcome to the forum ej! it sounds like a wheel bearing, they're known to fail on our cars...

It can also be the airflow through the rims causing it to make a weird noise, like a helicopter...

geeez seems like alot of things fail...electronics, lower control arms, coil packs, sensors, is this car problematic?
I don't need a car that will be really expensive to maintain....

Sounds like a wheel bearing is going.

If you don't want a car that is expensive to maintain, then stay away from Audis and all German cars. Buy a Toyota or Honda.

I had a rear wheel bearing replaced for $235.

yeah rear wheel bearing it sounds like $200-300 or so sounds right.

Audi's require love and attention (and $) to keep in top shape. The coil pack problem has been resolved (and has a recall). The control arm problem has a service action call currently. If you pay someone to take car of your Audi it will cost you - if you can do your own work then it will be fairly cheap.
