Audi/Pentosin ATF is rebranded Esso ATF LT 71141. Any ATF fluid that meets the specifications of that Esso fluid can be used. I believe Castrol and Quaker State both have fluids that are useable these days (their MERCONV fluid I think).

here is a good wright up on it

edit: very important bit there

QUAKER STATE MULTI-VEHICLE ATF is recommended for use in most USA vehicles. It is not suitable in a few pre-1986 vehicles where Type F fluids are specified, or some recent vehicles equipped with continuous variable transmissions (CVT’s). See the attached table with vehicle listings!

Yes, the fluid lasts for the lifetime of the transmission, but the lifetime may be shorter if you do not change it
EXACTLY! Audi would love for you to buy another $6000 tranny once the "life" is up with the old one. Don't believe everything you read people, there is usually a hidden agenda behind them.

Thanks for all the feed back guys. Since the transmission seems to be working ok I think I'm just going to leave it be unless I start noticing a bigger problem. I plan on getting a new A4 next summer anyway
