can u tell if timing belt is good/bad by looks

Default can u tell if timing belt is good/bad by looks

if u take the cover off,u can see alittle bit of the belt can u tell how good it is by lookn at it. it is not shreddin or anything like that but should it be a certian thickness so u know if it is good or bad

-can you see any writting still left on it?
-roll the belt over, and check for cracking
-does it look physically worn?

No thats not going to help you because the part that fails is not the belt its the tensioner it just lets go and shreds the belt...

cant really see it enough to really tell if it is worn or not and i dont know what a new 1 looks loke to compare it

Agree with SlimChriz.

On the Audi, it is usually the belt tensioner that fails, which results in the belt skipping teeth and getting shredded.
