Either Kragen or Autozone (I always forget which one) has been running a special for a 2-ton floor jack, jack stand, and creeper for $30. You need one jack and one stand for each side, so you should buy two sets and sell one of the creepers to a friend. I don't know if its a local deal, but you should check it out anyway.

If you want the car safely elevated and level, you will need TWO stands for each side.

Alternatively, if your mods do not entail removing the front wheels, I second the recommendation for Rhino ramps. Drive up the ramps, then put the rear up on jackstands to level it out, and you should be pretty safe working under the car. If I get the nerve to DIY my transmission servicing, this is probably the way I'll go.
