Default chip question

I was considering getting a chip for my car. I have a 2001 a4 1.8t manual Quattro. I want to get a GIAC, I have the money I just need my rent approval. My dad thinks that it might throw off the timing or mess up other parts of the engine. I have tried to tell him I don’t think that is true but he doesn’t believe me, so maybe you guys could verify that is false for him. Thanks.
